Cars: Gear Up for Adventures is a Disney style guide and product development portfolio themed around "road trips and camping."[1] At least two versions were created by Karen Kardan Design Studio,[2][3] on commission of Walt Disney Consumer Products.[1] The portfolio incorporates new CG personality poses into "background paintings" by Disney artist Rich Tuzon, among a plethora of other elements.[4]

Premise

The concept itself was developed for Mattel, according to former Disney Senior 3D Artist Anthony Mai,[5] who designed and modeled the characters in collaboration with the Disney•Pixar 2D Character Artists.[4] Similar to the 2016 Road Trip branding, the idea follows Lightning McQueen, Mater and friends—this time, Sally, Fillmore, and Sarge—as they fashion themselves with off-road tires and luggage carriers and head off for "outdoor adventure."[4] Die-cast molds were conceptualized by Rick Moser.[4]

While a Mattel series is not known to have made it past concept, the subsequent style guides were eventually released to European licensees for merchandise production. A trend board for "internal marketing" was pitched by Karen Kardan.[6]

  • The premise also highly resembles events in the 2017 Cars Origins junior novel Struck by Lightning, in which the same characters (minus Sally) embark on a road trip and tell campfire stories at night.
